Pipeline welding jobs enable welders to join sections of pipe for a living. This demand for welded pipes, creates employment. Let's get to what pipe welding jobs have to offer, and whether the income is worth it.
Pipeline welding jobs require intense dedication, and focus when it comes to completing the task at hand. This isn't a job for slouches, and the pipes you weld are usually evaluated and inspected, to ensure that the work you do, is of high quality.
Pipeline welding jobs are done in many different areas. Oil refineries, chemical plants, power plants, tunnels, and in a variety of outdoor environments are just a few examples. Where pipes are welded outdoors, there is a chance of you enduring different weather conditions. When these weather conditions aren't pleasant, they can be pretty harsh or put you in an extremely unforgiving situation. In many cases, pipe welding jobs will have you welding for several hours at a time.
You have what is often referred to as welding processes. Of course, certain processes are better suited to certain types of jobs than others would be. Welders favor the shielded metal-arc welding (Stick welding) process, and the gas tungsten arc welding (tungsten inert gas or "TIG" welding) process when they do pipeline welding jobs.
The pipe welding positions and specifications play a crucial part as well. In most cases, your welding on those pipes will be limited to the positions, which you have attained certifications to weld. The pipe welding position is all about how the pipe is laid out for the welding process. 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G are all the possible positions of the pipe to be welded. Pipe welding omits the 3G and 4G positions since they don't exist for this kind of welding.
The 1G position is known as the horizontal rolled position, in which the pipe is horizontal and rolled. In the 2G position, the pipe is placed vertically and welding is done horizontally. The 5G position is known as the horizontal fixed position, in which the pipe is horizontal, but it isn't turned or rolled during operation like the 1G pipe position. The 6G position has the pipe set up on a fixed (can't be rolled or moved during welding operation) 45 degree incline.
When it comes to the income you can make from pipeline welding jobs, you stand to earn the most when you attain 6G certification. Why is the income to be made from pipe welding jobs far greater as a 6G welder? The angular placement of the pipe in 6G, has the welder welding in all sorts of positions. Due to this, being certified in 6G, also qualifies you to weld pipes in 1G, 2G, and 5G. 6G welders have the ability to make six figures from doing pipeline welding jobs, annually.
Pipeline welding jobs will require you to do your best at all times. You can't be a slouch. Are these jobs worth it? It is definitely worth it when your welds can consistently pass inspection. It will take a bit of practice to get there, but it is definitely worth it when you do. Why not give it a go and try to improve your standard of living?
